Mile High Showroom

You have to excuse that these pictures are not the best quality, but I just had to share. David and Paul left at four o’clock in the morning on Monday and they totally forgot to take a camera (and their iPhone cameras are not great…it may be time an upgrade *hint, hint*). Anyway, what you are looking at are some quick snapshots of our install at Egg & Dart in Denver. We could not be more thrilled to have Marcali at Egg & Dart because, not only does their showroom totally rock, they are seriously the nicest people. We are very fortunate because we adore all of our showroom representation and not a whole lot of companies can say that.

So, as it happens, David and Paul got to Colorado just in time for a huge snow storm. We all knew that the storm was coming and I was pretty insistent that David should take a heavy coat (since I’m from Colorado, I know I thing or two about the snow… like that when it snows, you should have a coat…because snow is cold). As you can see from the picture, he totally listens to my advice. At least he took a sweatshirt, even if it is the lightest one he owns. Despite the cold weather, I’m completely jealous that I couldn’t tag along on this trip because they are having a great time.

If you are in the Denver area and would like to stop by and say hello to David and Paul, they will be at Egg & Dart in the Denver Design District bright and early tomorrow morning. Have a wonderful day!

Design San Francisco

Hello March! When did you get here? I know February is a short month, but this one seemed to go by exceptionally fast.

We started February off with a trip up north to San Francisco for Design San Francisco, a three day event for design professionals at the San Francisco Design Center. Design San Francisco, which everyone calls, “Market,” is something that David and I try to attend every year because so many of our clients are located in San Francisco and it is always a good chance to see everyone (not to mention a great excuse to sneak off to the City by the Bay for a few days). This year was especially exciting because it is the first year that we’ve had showroom representation in SF! We are officially installed at HEWN which is located on the fourth floor of the Design Galleria and it is one of the prettiest showrooms I have ever seen (and I’m not just saying that because they feature some of our pieces… it is seriously a knockout).

Seriously... how pretty is this showroom?

Seriously… how pretty is this showroom?

Several months ago, David and I were asked by the good people at HEWN (they are the BEST) if we could do a little talk. David said yes… I freaked out… the usual. Only kidding – I would never freak out (ha!). Seriously though, we both thought that it would be fun putting together a little presentation and decided that our theme should be on customization. We have set through countless power point presentations at design events and decided that we wanted to do something different. We wanted people to be able to not only see, but also feel how a piece of furniture can be completely transformed by making a few simple customizations (actually, I’ve been informed by my woodworkers, upholsterers and finishers that none of these customizations were, in any way, simple, but they are all totally doable… I’ve yet to dream up something that my team can’t do… and trust me, I’ve tried).

We chose one of our dining chairs and then the design team brain stormed all of the different incarnations that the chair could take on. Really, the sky is the limit when it comes to ways in which you can customize a dining chair, but we decided that we should limit ourselves to four or five. We chose our Emerson dining chair because they have two of the standard version in the showroom already so it would be easy to demonstrate our starting point. After much debate we chose to do one in teak for outdoor use, one carved out of solid walnut, one that had leather wrapped legs and a slip cover (so it was really like two chairs in one), and one that is as eco-friendly as possible (FSC certified wood, green-guard certified fabric, no VOC finishes, latex and organic cotton fill, etc).

Here are some of our reimagined Emerson dining chairs along with our Noosa Teak Lounge.

A couple of weeks before our trip, the program for the event arrived and actually seeing the schedule with our presentation description in print made everything feel exceedingly real, extremely fast. We were actually doing this! We were also surprised to see that our presentation was going to be a luncheon (we assumed that we’d be at the end of the day when most people have gotten tired and gone home). Still, because we are pretty unknown (like really, really unknown), I figured that (maybe) about ten people would show up, if we were lucky.

The day of our talk finally arrived (and our dining chairs all made it in one piece!). David doesn’t get nervous and I pretend not to get nervous, usually with mixed results. This time, I felt good; maybe a little too good. The feeling lasted until about twenty minutes before we were set to talk when I had a mini-freak out. They were expecting a full house (way more than ten I had envisioned) and even people who hadn’t RSVP’d started showing up. I could feel that an anxiety attack was imminent. Thankfully I had both my friend Heather in Minnesota and Michelle back at the office talking me off of my ledge via text messaging (seriously what did people do before smart phones?). Crisis averted! The talk ended up going very well. David was a star (as always). We presented our pieces and then did a little question and answer session before everyone was whisked off to a champagne luncheon.

You can't tell but there is a mini freak-out going on here... I think the champagne helped.

Don’t be fooled by the smile. You can’t tell but there is a mini freak-out going on here… I think the champagne helped.

That night we were invited to the California Home + Design awards gala and we had the best time (as you can see in our photo booth picture). The rest of our trip was spent enjoying other talks at the HEWN showroom and meet-ups with friends and colleagues in the design world. Then, to cap off our trip we got to attend the Grand Opening for HEWN which was THE EVENT of Market. Despite my crowd aversion (and it was quite a crowd, let me tell you) I had the best time (thanks, in part to fabulous champagne, tiny milkshakes and delicious caramel bees… but mostly thanks to such gracious hosts).

Our parting gift from HEWN, Caramel Bees from John and Kira’s. They are a new favorite and I can’t rave enough about them.

These are some of the best candies ever! Seriously.

Behind the Scenes: Noosa Photo Shoot

With spring rapidly approaching, we had to pull ourselves together and come up with an ad for spring 2013 publications. We thought that the perfect subject for the ad would be a piece from the Noosa Collection: our new collection of premium outdoor teak furniture that officially debuts this summer (we’ve already started taking pre-orders for mid-summer delivery). Once we settled on which piece (the lounge), we had to come up with a concept. The only thing that everyone could agree on was that it should feel summery. Our ad was due the first week of February and at the end of January we were having exceptionally cold weather. There was a fear (slight panic on my part) that we wouldn’t have a day that could even remotely appear summery to shoot our ad, especially since the general consensus was that the beach would be the perfect place to shoot and the beach had been overcast for days. Always the optimist, David insisted that everything would work out in the end.

It had been rainy for several days, when we finally had a day of bright sunshine with only a slight breeze (and slight breezes inland generally equate no marine layer at the beach). David, Michelle and I loaded up a van with everything we might possibly need for a photo shoot and made our way to Malibu. When we arrived at our chosen destination, we all decided exactly where we wanted the ad to be shot. Our problem was that not only was our preferred location quite far from the car, we were also going to have to make our way down a rather steep incline to get there and someone (David) had to carry the chair. In the end, it was worth it. The slight breeze made for a beautiful sunny day and in the end, we got the exact picture we were hoping for (not to mention the fact that we had an absolute blast during the shoot).

Wednesday, February 6, 2013         12:00PM – 1:00PM

Here is the description of what our presentation will entail:

Because no two clients are line, Marcali Designs co-founders David and Jennifer Dolak will demonstrate how one piece of furniture can be transformed to meet each client’s individual needs.  Using one chair design, they will illustrate how made-to-order craftsmanship allows a product to be produced in a number of ways: traditional, modern, eco-friendly, outdoor and more.  Space is limited.  Reserve your seat at rsvp@hewn.com.

What are those chairs?

We’ve had a lot of great response to our fall 2012 ad and everyone has been asking about the chairs that were featured. The ad shows a pair of Trager Chairs and one of our Brenton Wingback chairs. The Brenton is upholstered in a Marcali leather from the Artisan collection in color smoke. Have a wonderful weekend!

Fall Ads Are Out!

Our Fall 2012 Marcali ad is out in the new Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth issues of Luxe Interiors and Design. As you can see from the below picture, Jennifer was (clearly) very excited to obtain her copy.

Not in the Los Angeles or Dallas areas? Here is a picture of the ad:

Stay tuned for more exciting news, coming soon.

Custom Esther

We recently shipped this gorgeous custom version of our Esther Banquette (above) to a client. I had a hard time letting it go because I was absolutely in love with the white lacquer and teal combination (and because I have serious hording tendencies, but I digress). This custom Esther is slightly taller than our standard version and it is also oval in shape as opposed to the standard round. Isn’t it lovely? Of course, I’m also in love with our standard Esther (shown below with our black lacquer finish).

Marcali Fall 2012 Advertisement

We’ve been crazy busy at Marcali over the last several months. We have a new showroom coming in San Francisco in September, our Dallas showroom is moving to a bigger location we have several new pieces that we are adding to our line and we our dipping our toes into the world of advertising.

Just last week we had our first official photo shoot for an advertisement with the amazing and talented Thierry Bearzatto.  The final layout was finished and submitted on Monday. It will be appearing in the fall issue of Luxe Interiors and Design in both Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth.

And here are some outtakes from the shoot (they were taken with my little camera, so they aren’t nearly as cool as the real deal, but I wanted to document the day for my scrapbook):

Windows to the World

In May we worked on a really fun project for the Legends of La Cienega’s event in which the top names in the design industry came together to decorate the windows in the La Cienega Design Quarter. This year’s theme was “Windows to the World” and the designers were tasked with creating vignettes of destinations around the world in LCDQ member storefronts.

We were privileged to work with SFA Designs on their window paying homage to Abu Dhabi at the Gina Berschneider showroom. The window featured a pair of Penelope lounges, a Luke table, a Leia table and a royal crown inspired custom pouf that was upholstered in a plush pink Opuzan fabric.

David and I snapped a couple of pictures with our iPhone at the event but there are some great professional pictures on the SFA Blog that you should really check out. The project was a delight and we really enjoyed working with all of the wonderful people at SFA.

2012 Off to a Good Start

I feel like our little blog has been somewhat abandoned, and I apologize for that. We are back though and 2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Marcali designs. We have a lot of projects in the works and we look forward to telling you about them as the year progresses.

Since the New Year we have been working nonstop. Last week we took a short break from work to attend the grand opening of Jiun Ho De Jia, Jiun Ho’s ne 11,000 sq. ft. gallery and design studio on Folsom Street in San Francisco. The space is gorgeous and we send our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Jiun Ho team on a job well done. Here is a picture of the two of us mugging for the camera on the red carpet:
